West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Authority Medical Adviser

Job title: Authority Medical Adviser

Salary: Rate dependent on qualification and experience

Location: West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service Headquarters, Birkenshaw, West Yorkshire

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work alongside the Occupational Health team to assist the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service in providing a proactive Occupational Health service.

You will provide a consultancy and advisory service on a wide range of occupational health issues including medical retirements, sickness absence referrals, health surveillance, medical examinations and relevant policies and procedures. You will also be required to act as the Authority’s “Appointed Doctor” as required by the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

The successful candidate will have proven experience in the provision of occupational health services as well as experience in providing medical advice to employers on a wide range of medical issues. Experience in the Fire & Rescue sector is desirable but not essential. A qualification of DipOccMed is essential as is membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine at AFOM level or above. Candidates should be able to satisfactorily complete pre-employment checks and have an exemplary conduct record.

This role involves the supply of independent specialist medical advisory services therefore the successful candidate will not be offered a contract of employment but will have the status of an independent contractor for the provision of services and will be required to enter into a contract to that effect, including the provision of their own professional liability indemnity insurance cover.

The post holder will be required to provide a minimum of 144 sessions per annum, which will generally be spread evenly across each month (12 per month). Ideally these will be fixed days e.g. Mon & Weds, or Tues & Thurs, however there is scope for some flexibility dependent on workload & availability. Payment will be on a sessional basis (4hr) and will be £600 per session.
