The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions and child maintenance policy. As the UK’s biggest public service department, they administer the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill-health benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers.
As Head Medical Practitioner and the department’s most senior medical professional, you will make a positive difference to the lives of millions of people. Specifically, you will ensure expert clinical advice informs policy, legislation and delivery decisions on social security and employment benefits and services – including the Personal Independence Payment and Employment and Support Allowance.
This is a high-profile leadership role, requiring both substantial medical experience and well-developed strategic expertise. A medical practitioner, fully registered with the GMC, you’ll have proven your ability to lead and motivate a team of experienced medical professionals, and to engage and influence at senior levels. Capable of understanding both high-level strategy and complex policy detail across a broad portfolio, you’ll be ready to design and deliver innovative responses to challenging issues. The ability to take accountability for decisions under pressure is key.
