FREE for ALL (please log in on the SOM website first).

Summary:

The health of healthcare workers had  received little attention in Nigeria until the Ebola and COVID -19 pandemics which highlighted the vulnerability of frontline healthcare workers. Subsequently, several training programmes were mounted to increase the  capacity of healthcare workers in Infection Prevention and Control with little attention to other aspects of  health and safety  and the wellbeing of healthcare workers.

This presentation highlights a project to study the impact of  OH training of frontline healthcare workers in Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria to improve health and safety practices and wellbeing.  The project was sponsored by Global Health Partnerships (formerly THET) and was conducted at the College of Medicine at Ibadan in collaboration with SOM  project team in the UK. The presentation reports the findings of a pre intervention survey of knowledge and practice of health and safety measures at work and wellbeing of healthcare workers, 430 primary healthcare workers and 191 doctors . This was followed by an in-person 4 -day training programme for 261 primary healthcare workers and 61 doctors.  Post intervention survey  to determine the impact of the training programme showed improvement in health and safety practices and wellbeing in quantitative and qualitative assessments. This project was the first occupational health training programme for primary healthcare workers in Oyo State and has the potential to be scaled up to other states in Nigeria.
