This exclusive update is intended for those who have experience of HAVS surveillance and will summarise developments in health surveillance over recent years.  Topics covered will be 
•    The value and interpretation of Allen’s test, and action following abnormalities identified by that
•    Update on assessment of carpal tunnel syndrome – nerve conduction and MRI
•    Update on sensory assessment with particular reference to Purdue pegboard test 
•    Progress in the search for biomarkers 
•    Aschenbach’s syndrome – another potential differential to be considered. 

 
Speaker bio:

Roger Cooke MStJ, MB ChB, FRCP(Glasg), DIH, FFOM, DipIMC

Roger is an Occupational Medicine consultant who qualified at Birmingham University in 1975, and undertook specialist occupational health training with the National Coal Board and British Telecom before becoming worldwide Chief Medical Officer for GKN Plc. 

He was honorary senior lecturer at Birmingham University Institute of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (IOEM), where he was clinical lead for hand arm vibration courses (HAVS) courses, until they ceased because of the pandemic. Since then he has continued to lead and teach such courses through a commercial provider. He lectures and teaches on subjects related to vibration (hand arm vibration and whole body vibration), carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), noise and other occupational health subjects. He served two terms as an expert member of the Health Protection Agency UK Advisory Panel on Bloodborne Viruses in Healthcare Workers, in which role he co-authored national guidance for Emergency Healthcare Workers. In 2022 he was invited to be part of the team providing an occupational health module on the international MPH course at the French national school for public health (EHESP). He has previously been HAVS chief examiner for the FOM, member and past chair of the SOM HAVS Special Interest Group, and invited lecturer at l’Ecole des Hautes Etudies de Santé Publique, Paris
