Dr Will Ponsonby – Artisanal and small scale gold mining
Dr Ponsonby will present on artisanal and small scale gold mining, including the use of mercury, female and child labour and the health effects observed. This information will be taken from the WHO literature review.
Dr Peter Connaughton – The cost of extraction: Protecting miners from traditional and emerging risks
Dr Connaughton will discuss current approaches to traditional risks such as heat, ultraviolet radiation and hand injuries. He will also present on the growing challenges including mental health and wellness, and will discuss successes, failures and opportunities in each of these areas.
Biographies:
Dr Will Ponsonby is a Past President of the UK Society of Occupational medicine (2018/2019) and has a breadth of experience in occupational medicine across the energy and resources sector. After qualifying in Birmingham UK in 1986, he trained in general practice and emergency medicine.
From 1996 he ran the medical service for Azerbaijan International Operating Company (AIOC)/BP in Baku Azerbaijan. He was then International SOS Regional Medical Director for Russia and Kazakhstan for 4 years. While subsequently working for Shell he became board certified in occupational medicine in 2002.
Will remained at Shell until 2015, before taking on the role of Chief Medical Officer for Rio Tinto, which he held until 2018, based in London and Singapore, He has run his private occupational health consultancy practice since 2019 and is Senior Lecturer in Occupational Medicine University of Manchester. 2 years ago, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland established an introductory online training course for Occupational Medicine. He was appointed as program lead. This course provides training in Occupational Medicine to doctors across the globe.
Dr Peter Connaughton is an occupational physician in Perth, Western Australia and he has consulted to Rio Tinto Iron Ore for the past 16 years. He is the honorary Secretary of the International Occupational Medicine Society Collaborative, which now has members from over 50 countries and is actively collaborating with the WHO and the ILO.
Peter is a Past-President of AFOEM (serving from 2016 to 2018) and he remains a member of the "It Pays to Care" working group. Peter initially trained in OEM at the Institute of Occupational Medicine, Edinburgh. He is a former Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle. His special interests include fostering international collaboration in OEM and assessing the value and impact of occupational health strategies.
